Abstract

“Acoustic Surgery”, which discussed the physics behind focused ultrasound surgery(FUS) and its primary medical application: destruction of cancerous cells. This topic relates to our optics course because FUS makes use of some ideas that we discuss in class: the focal point of waves (not light, but here it is sound waves); and interactions between waves and matter, such as attenuation, phase shifts, resonance and developments in the ultrasound source. Ultrasound elastography is a process that images the site og surgery; this process incorporates ideas from our optics course such Young’s Elastics Modules. Time –reversed acoustic is a theory that aims to create focal the point of an ultrasound wave behind structures that are opaque to ultrasound imaging techniques; time reversed acoustics incorporates ideas from our class such as phase shifting. And new ultrasound sources are being researched in an attempt to reduce the exposure time of surgery; researchers are working to increase the intensity of sources by combining multiple focal points for sound waves. Kewords:- focused Ultrasound surgery, Multiple focal points, Thermal ultrasound, Non thermal ultrasound.
