Abstract

Irrigation has been one of the chief factor for the increase of agricultural production and also provides the dramatic improvements in agricultural performance. Even the vertical expansion of cultivation is possible with the intensive irrigational facilities because advanced commercial agricultural technology is entirely dependent upon irrigation. In spatio - temporial, the soil moisture deficit has a variable high magnitude. Hence, for efficient utilization of the existing rainfall situation has created an acute need for irrigation. Irrigation facilities are more important as a decisive factor in crop regionalization than any other determinant in the inherently dry lands. Irrigation is the effort to overcome the rainfall deficiency by means of conservation and optimum utilization for ground and water resources. Indian agriculture has undergone a revolutionary change in recent years. Agriculture production has increased substantially and the cropping pattern in many years have witnessed significant structure changes in cultivation without irrigation is uneconomic, therefore, extension of irrigation has played a key role in bringing about this transformation.
