Though frontline health workers play a very important role in delivering health services in the community (and they often are the first point of contact for seeking services for the community), there is little research that reflects on their accounts and experiences of delivering health services. This paper in this context reflects on the accounts given by the ASHA workers about their experiences, challenges they face in gaining trust of the community to sustain their legitimacy and of producing evidence for the health system and prove to be a „good health worker?. I will also draw upon the accounts of others like the ANMs, medical officers about how they describe and interpret the roles and work of the ASHAs. A key point that comes from these accounts of is around their performance of being an active or not so active ASHA. I will orient my presentation around this narrative of „active asha? reflecting on who is an active ASHA, what does it mean, what is its impact on delivering health services and possible health outcomes.
