Translating a work of literature, although not an impossible deed but is one of the most complicated and fragile tasks one can commence in the empire of the written word. It takes years to master the world of language and even more time to achieve a adequate understanding of the culture that is involved in order to adapt a clear concept of what the original text is mainly attempting to say to the target audience. One man had the audacity and power to stand in front of the entire world and say, “Yes, I can do it.”1 He was harassed in the press as a impostor and worse, yet by unrelenting attempt he proved that he is not only a competent writer in languages but also an efficient artist as well. This is the mystery that I will explore in this study, the puzzle of the linguistic abilities of Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov (1899-1977), in terms of his novel The Gift (1960).
