Studies on the root characteristics as well as soil binding capacity of seven grasses have been worked out. They are Cenchrus ciliaris Linn, Chrysopogon fulvus (Spreng) Chiov, Cynodon dactylon (Linn) Pers, Desmostachya bipinnata (Linn) Stapf, Dichanthium annulatum (Forsk) Stapf, Heteropogon contortus (Linn) Beauv and Saccharum munja Roxb. Each grass species was studied for its number of roots, average depth, horizontal extent and maximum length of roots, followed by the calculation of its value of soil binding capacity. Those species having better root characteristics and highest soil binding capacity values are recommended as suitable grass species for protection of banks and ravines of Khannaut river in Shahjahanpur district.
