Abstract

Plastic waste has been widely detected in aquatic environment all over the world. Plastic is likely to pose a higher environmental impact as well as they are more prone to absorb organic contamination and pathogen from the surrounding media, due to their higher surface area to volume ratio. Due to their biodegradation resistance properties plastic can persist and accumulate in aquatic ecosystem for longer period. Plastic is an emerging issue that might affect biological diversity and human health. Rivers are known to play crucial role in transporting land based plastic waste to the oceans. Riverine ecosystem is also directly affected by plastic pollution.
