SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS OF MIGRANTS IN MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES OF PUNJAB

Abstract

Migrants labour has played crucial role in the economic development process across the world. in general and in promoting industrial activities in particular .In India there exists large variations in socio economics activities across Indian states . This has led process of migration from under developed states to developed states. The state of Punjab has witnessed huge inflow of migratory labour from less developed states like Bihar/U.P. where the process of agricultural development is relatively low and hence very less employment opportunities exists in these states. .The state of Punjab has witnessed a significant growth in manufacturing industries in the last few decades, which led to emergence of huge demand for labour which incidentally could not be fulfilled by local population. .Accordingly Punjab is has attracted very proportion of migrant workers in the manufacturing industries .The present paper attempt to analyse the socio economic conditions of migrants labour over a period of time. Primary survey was conducted on 500 migratory labour working in manufacturing industries to study to what extent the labour has got the basic requirements for working in manufacturing industries. Also to examine to what extent workers expectations have been fulfilled by the employers. The technique of Chi square has been used to study the level of socio economic conditions as per various demographics of migrant workers .The findings of the study will help in devising appropriate policies for in improving the socio economic conditions of migrant workers .
