Abstract

CSR can be defined as the responsibilities of corporations of all types and sectors towards society and environment in which they operate, as well as to their stakeholders (Carroll, 1999; Davis, 1992; Hart, 1997; Shamir, 2005). Health care is an essential need of the society and it is an integral part thereof. Through health care system, everybody is entitled to medical services to provide health and well-being that improves lifestyle. Policymakers and researchers focus substantial attention on healthcare after realizing the collective obligation of preserving a health care for the present and future generations. So the present study endeavors to analyse CSR practices performed by healthcare organizations listed on S&P BSE HEALTHCARE INDEX. Further, the study has made an attempt to analyse strategic role of CSR in healthcare sector of India. Data has been collected with the help of annual reports of selected companies and Prowess Database. While collecting the data for companies in healthcare, it was observed that a majority of the companies did not have any report or information available on CSR. Only a few companies either had separate sustainability or corporate responsibility reports or a page on their websites dedicated to the subject. Moreover, companies are not reporting using any recognised reporting framework. Collected data has been analysed with the help of SPSS 16.0. The results show that CSR practices of companies have improved over the time. Further, research reveals that healthcare organizations spend more on R&D than on their employees, environment and society. Furthermore, CSR practices of a firm impact its performance negatively in short run while positively in long run confirming the strategic role of CSR.
