Abstract

Social media has become the heart throb of many individuals ranging from the school going students to old aged people. We can notice people getting so much involved into their phone that they remain invisible even if they are amidst friends or relatives. This shows how social media has gained popularity with days passing by. Matured people are trying to connect to their school friends or scroll to get news. But the students are using social media for what? Because of this social media trend, it is really necessary to know the different reasons behind using social media. With this objective in mind, a short survey was conducted amongst the general colleges of Tezpur, Assam. The sample size was 383 and was calculated using the formula N/(1+ N〖(e)〗^2 ) . The data were collected through questionnaire using Nth sampling method. While doing the survey facts came to light that students use social media not only for entertainment but also for productive purposes. In light of the findings the paper suggests certain measures to activate more of positive aspects of social media towards the undergraduate students.
