Disruptive funding innovations enhances sustainability of small ventures and projects which are hitherto overlooked by formal sources of funding. Such innovations lead to increased efficiency, better credit supply and reaching out to the target groups. The paper is an attempt to explore the various dimensions of disruptive financing which has come across as a new source of start up funding. The paper explores crowdfunding as a disruptive financing mechanism. The various models, benefits and limitations of crowdfunding have been discussed. It attempts to understand the issues and challenges facing the industry. Case study of two international Crowdfunding Platforms (CFPs) and three Indian based CFPs have been analyzed to understand the new phenomenon. The industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 26.87% during the period 2016- 2020. However, the industry remains unregulated in India. The paper has wide policy implications and it will pave the way for the crowdfunding industry in the future.
