In WiMAX/IEEE 802.16 with mobility support, involves many steps are included in the network entry procedure for a mobile station such as scanning for an available channel and performing initial ranging in order to settle on power and timing offset requirements. A mobile station performs these steps at start up or when about to perform a handover and this must be done rapidly in order to lessen delays in network access or possible dropped connections. Strategies are proposed by us that can be used by a mobile station to reduce the time required for scanning and ranging operations while trying to establish network connectivity or perform a handover between nearby base stations. In this paper I have tried to do analytical and comparative study between Wimax and Wi-Fi technologies.
