Abstract
Study focuses on underwriting profitability of Indian non-life insurers. All the companies from the public andprivate sector has been taken for the study. The study period is 2015-16 and 2016-17. Three parameters of earning and profitability as provided by IMF for the financial performance has been considered. The study observes that underwriting performance of both the public and private sector companies are not still upto international standards. Combined ratio is above 100, which is alarming. Moreover, despite the huge potential for insurance business, per capita expenditure on insurance is marginal even among Asian nations resulting in a very low share of insurance income in GDP.
