WOLE SOYINKA AND YORUBA CULTURE.

Abstract

Akinwande olu wole Soyinka was born on july 13,1934 at Abeoukuta ,near Ibadan in west Nigeria.HE is poet, novelist playwright and a Nobel Laureate in literature for 1986. Abeoukuta is an important city in the heartland of the Yoruba ethnic group, a culturally and historically rich community. Soyinka's literary works manifests a close self experienced connection with this rich and complex heritage. After spending two years at the recently founded (1948) university college Ibadan, where he met Achebe and Okiyobs Soyinka went to the university of leeds. While in England Soyinka had written several plays between 1958 and 1960 read drama scripts for the Royal court Theatre. On his return to Nigeria he was welcomed with commission to write plays,opportunities to write for newspapers and broad caste on the radio, and a Rockefeller fellowship to do research into dramatic elements within Yoruba ritual.
