Abstract

Family businesses are often thought of as small to mid-sized firms where the central power and decision making structures are in control of the members of a particular family & Bloch, 2012). Family businesses tend to focus on resilience and long term survival and their unique structure has led to some immensely successful corporations across the world the likes of which include Samsung, Porsche and Reliance Industries. Employee deviance is commonly described as deliberate behaviour of the employee that violates the norms of the organisation and puts the well-being of fellow employees at risk (Robinson & Bennett, 1995). Every year companies across the world lose millions of dollars to employee deviance issues. This case looks at everyday employee deviance issues in a family run business, ABC Enterprises. The company has been in the market for 70 years and are dealers in ball bearings. With the third generation of the family joining the management the company is looking to re-work some of their employee policies to put an end to everyday employee problems like late coming, unexpected leaves and misuse of company property. The case looks at how the company has responded to these issues in terms of policy changes and ponders what should be the approach that the company takes in their over-all policy-making process.
