Abstract

Abstract The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry is one of the biggest industries in the Indian economy, contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. Rapid growth in this industry has made India as a hub for information technology and as a result, India has today become one of the leading exporters of IT/ ITES services. This research aimed to examine the relationship between the total economic growth of the country and the ICT industry in India and also study the impact of ICT industry on Indian economy. The time period considered for the study is 2000-2016. Economic growth of India was represented by GDP, whereas the contribution of ICT industry was measured through variables such as capital stock, labour hours, total factor productivity, capital stock of non ICT industry/sectors, total exports from ICT industry, and investment in startups. To examine the relationship co-integration test was performed along with Granger causality test. Similarly multiple regression analysis was conducted to examine the impact of ICT on economic growth. Results from the co-integration test confirm the long run relationship between ICT and economic growth. Finally the regression analysis shows that startups in this industry have had a significant and positive impact on economic growth.
