Abstract

Saffron plant is one of the most important specie. The stigmas in the delicately scented saffron flowers are dried and used in cooking to colour, flavour and add a unique aroma to the meal. It is the most precious and most expensive spice inthe world derived from the stigma of the flower of Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) plant. Saffron containsmany plant derived chemical compounds that are known to have several biological activitiesincluding antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer activities and ant proliferative. Saffron acts as animportant antioxidant that protects body from oxidant-induced stress, infections and acts as immunemodulator. The active components in saffron have many therapeutic applications in many traditionalmedicines as antiseptic, antidepressant, anti-oxidant, digestive and anti-consultant. The present articleattempt to generate information on impacts of cement pollution on saffron plant. This study was aimed to know the impact of cement industries dust on various parts of Saffron plant growing at different distances from the cement industrial belt Khrew, Kashmir, India. As this plant, aprecious asset is under various threats among them, main threat is cement pollution. As because ofcement pollution, process of accumulation of heavy metal levels in soil and plant samples are seenhigh and as plants are more sensitive to excessive amounts of heavy metals than animals and henceare indicators for alerting against possible dangers for humans and animals.
