Abstract

The revival of Indian manufacturing has been a key policy objective of the government, identifying this sector as the engine of long run growth. Make in India, is now a flagship initiative of the central government. But 'what should India make?’. Early development thinking of Lewis (1954) ‘was based on the idea of sector transformation, in the two sector (traditional and modern) moving resources from the agricultural/traditional sector to manufacturing non-traditional sector’. Although development thinking over the last two-decades has moved away from discussions about sectoral transformations and towards a more explicit growth perspective. The importance of structural transformation is starting to be rehabilitated without abandoning the growth perspective.
