Abstract

When people think about theoretical mathematics they often think of the Pythagoreans and Euclid's Elements. For example, the Pythagoreans are reputed to have been the earliest to think about the issue of irrational numbers. A number which is the ratio of two integers a and b, where b is not zero, is called rational. For measuring lengths, areas, and volumes in practical terms the way a chemist might need to, one can get away with only rational numbers.
