Abstract

Anita Desai, a prominent contributor to the development of Indian English novel is commended for depiction of new dimensions to Indo Anglican fiction. Her second novel ‘Voices in the city’ had long been regarded by Western academia as a portrait of a dark, joyless city Calcutta. It explores and expounds personal suffering arising out of the feverish sensitivity of the young intellectuals who have lost their way in the modern urban world. In this novel Desai also deals with her usual theme of feminine sensibility and distorted husband- wife relationships. It also focuses on human relationship and their freedom of life in its real but inner perspective. The characters move away from the ordinary because of their unhealthy introspection. The novel reflects a vivid picture of India’s social transition a phase in which the older elements are not altogether dead, and the emergent only not fully evolved. Through apt symbolism, the novelist has rendered the pathetic plight of the characters that touches our heart. Desai has made the city of Calcutta a vital character of the novel and it has been described as a monster city. In this a collateral theme of the search for identity gives a pessimistic outlook of the major characters in the novel. In the suffocating darkness of their world, they have no communication. The purpose of the article is to highlight the situations and circumstances pour its direct effect on the psyche of the people. The three main characters of the novel are the sufferers in their life. It is because of their attitudinal discomfort which repels them to move in the negative prospects of life. Their life becomes panic and no colours in their life and suffers in every aspect. The characters are totally upset and always try to blame the present condition of their life and wants to escape from the city which is not favour of them.
