Abstract

An asset becomes non-performing when it ceases to generate income for the bank. It actually is the ratio of Non-performing Credit to Total Credit. Earlier a non- performing asset was defined as a credit facility in respect of which the interest or installment of principal has remained due for a specified period of time which was reduced from four quarters to one quarter in a phased manner. Due to the improvements in the payment and settlement system, recovery climate, upgradation of technology in the banking system, etc., it has been decided to dispense with past due concept with effect from March31, 2001. With a view to moving towards international best practices and to ensure greater transparency, it has been decided to adopt the 90 days overdue norms for the identification of NPA s from the year ending March31, 2004.
