Abstract

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease of knee joints which results painful joint locking, commonly occurs in middle-aged and elderly person due to breakdown of cartilage. It is more painful in weight bearing joints and advanced age, past trauma and obesity are main risk factor. In 1990, OA was estimated to be the 8th leading non-fatal burden of disease, with 2.8% disability of total living. It accounts 15% of all musculoskeletal disorders in patients aged above 45 years. In present scenarios, OA of Knee is the 4th most important global cause of disability in women and 8th most important in men. Worldwide estimation reported that women are more prevalent to symptomatic OA at age  60 years than men. Out of all symptomatic OA,more than 50%show X-ray evidence in either of the joints. Among the world,Chinese men have lowest and Indian women has highest age-standardized pain rate.
