THE PAINTING TRADITION OF ‘AJAYMERU’ AJMER

Ajmer was founded in the 6th-7th Century by Ajaypal by the name of Ajaymeru. The Chauhan rule prevailed here upto 1194 A.D. in which prithviraj played a vital role, as the last Hindu emperor. From the 14th century, it remained under the rulers of delhi, gujarat, Malwa and also maharana kumbha. Akbar occupied it in 1550 A.D. He visited this place on a holy pilgrimage to the Dargah of Khawaja Nizamuddin Chisti. In 1613 A.D. Jahangir came to this place during his fight with Mewar and remained for three Years here. Shahjahan also visited this place during his reign. Later on the famous succession battle between Darashikoh and Aurangzeb took place here. It was also from this place that Aurangzeb conducted his fight with the Marwar fulers for three years. In 1707 A.D. Maharaja Ajit Singh of Jodhpur gained control over it after numerous attacks. Abhai Singh, his son and successor ruler over Ajmer for elevan years continuously. Later on, this place remained under the occupation of Bhakat Singh for one year, Vijay Singh for 7 years and Ram Singh for two years. After that it passed on to the Marhallas control. The Britishers occupied it in the ensuing period and ruled over it for 129 Years. The rural areas, however, remained under the local Rajput feudalories during this period.
