A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE STATUS OF HIGHER EDUCATION BETWEEN URBAN AND RURAL AREAS OF INDIA WITH REFERENCE TO LAKHIMPUR DISTRICT, ASSAM

Abstract

Education is a continuous process of acquiring knowledge and developing human resource of human beings. It is not only a liberating force but also democratizing force, removing the barriers of caste and class, reducing the inequalities imposed by birth or any other circumstances. Higher education plays a significant role in empowering the individual with necessary skills to achieve the personal and social goals. Equity is the essential qualities of educational system. Educational opportunities should be given to all sector of the society. There is a disparity between rural and urban sector regarding higher education. it has been found that urban Ger is about three times higher i.e. 23.79 than the rural i.e. 7.51. For women it is four times i.e. 22.56 for urban as compared to 5.67 for rural. Whereas for urban’s men it is about twice and half higher than the rural men, the corresponding figure being 24.77 for urban and 9.28 for rural.
