Abstract

Unsteady numerical simulation of temperature dependent thermal conductivity of aluminium casting in green sand mould has been conducted. Two-dimensional heat conduction equation with temperature dependent thermal properties governs the physical problem. Convective boundary condition has been considered at the interface where liquid metal meets the mould cavity. Two-dimensional finite difference analysis (FDA) of heat conduction equation in unsteady and transient state has been solved using MATLAB R2012a to study the thermal flow and cooling rate. The properties of materials used are green sand mould and pure aluminium. The results obtained by the present study are: temperature distribution of aluminium molten metal in green sand mould for 2D casting for steady problem and cooling rate of liquid metal with time.
