Abstract

ABSTRACT Different people use the Internet with different motivations, people usually are not motivated to use the Internet only for one reason and an amalgamation of factors motivates them to use the Internet. In this article, motivations of using the Internet are discussed among Muslims of Mysore; in a simple word, the aim is to find the answers of the question “why Muslims of Mysore use the Internet. This article is based on an ethnographic study of the Internet in Muslim community of Mysore in the framework of a PhD research, conducted during three years fieldwork, from 2011 to 2014. In this ethnographic research, several aspects of the ways through which Muslim of Mysore encounter, interpret and assimilate the Internet on the context of their everyday lives have been investigated in details. In an overall view, factors that motivate Muslim participants in this study can be classified on five major categories including: 1) to benefit from advantages of the Internet as a new communication technology, 2) to have more social engagement, 3) to have more freedom on online space, 4) the intention of being modern and up to date through using the Internet as an important part of youth culture, and 5) curiosity to know about the Internet.
