A pregnant woman consumes about 60,000 Kcal over and above normal metabolic requirements. Lactation demands about 550 Kcal per day. child survival correlates with birth weight. And birth weight is correlated to the weight gain of about 12Kg of weight during pregnancy and several studies had indicated that weight gain of poor Indian women average 6.5 Kg during pregnancy.
