Abstract

Psychologists have proved it experimentally that motivation causes and enhances learning. The following statement explains the role that motivation plays in training—“to learn, one must want to learn”. “A person who wants to develop himself or herself will do so; a person who wants to be developed rarely is”. As cognitive ability does predict training outcomes, so also does motivation. What determines motivation to succeed in training? The answer is – “both personal and contextual factors are important. The important determinants of motivation to learn at the level of the individual are the personality characteristics of consciousness (striving for excellence, having high performance standards, setting challenging personal goals) and internal locus of control (belief that one controls his or her own fate). The climate in which the trainee functions, coupled with the support he or she receive from supervisors and peers is also critical at the level of the organization.
