Abstract

The novel as a literary genre had a substantial increase in popularity in the 18th century. During this time, classic, moralistic narratives gave way to more realistic, experimental forms of storytelling. Complex characters and complex stories were created by authors like Daniel Defoe, Samuel Richardson, and Henry Fielding to represent the changing social, economic, and political milieu.
