Abstract

The history of African women reveal their peculiar predicament within their culture as victim of a tripartite form of oppression- racism, classism and sexism. Their existence is denied not only by the white community but also by their own people. They have suffered along with Black men since the days of slavery but their position has been more vulnerable because of womanhood. Writers like Gloria Naylor, Toni Morrison and Alice Walker have thematically woven stories of black women and their quest for identity in their novels.
