Abstract

R.K. Narayan was a well known writer both in India and overseas. In the United states, he is compered to William Faulkner. He was also included in a collection of writers and their works published by the British Council, making him the only Indian to get this honour. He was awarded the degree of D.Litt by both Leads University and Delhi University. In 1960 he received a Sahitya Academy award for his novel The Guide (1958) and the Indian government honoured him with the Padma Bhusan in 1964. His main goal in all of his writings is to provide aesthetic delight. Comedy and wit are a keen observation and a deft use of language.
