Abstract

For any economy to move on a higher growth trajectory, sustained rise in productivity is pre-requisite. Most growth models assign key role to technology for this to happen. The introduction and diffusion of technology though help in achieving higher growth through increased productivity but entails a huge amount of ‘creative destruction’ in the process, In other words, introduction or improvement of goods and services may lead to declined demand for labour and hence employment growth (World Employment Report, 2004-05). Empirical studies on the developed countries also reflect that rapid and sustained increase in productivity is required to lift the standards of living of people and hence thereby to eradicate mass poverty.
