Pentachloro phenol (PCP) and m-Dinitro benzene (MDB) strongly inhibited the mycelial growth of a wild type Neurospora crassa strain grown on Malt-yeast extract medium containing yeast, malt, peptone, alkali treated cellulose powder (ATCP) and 1 / D- glucose at 28 C. MDB and PCP, both of 1.5 × 10-6 M concentration were added separately to the cultures of the fungus (pH 5.0 to 5.2) using carboxymethyl cellulose as the substrate. It was observed that MDB is a stronger fungicide than PCP, as much higher concentration of later than that of the former was required to inhibit the growth of the fungus N. crassa.
