Abstract

Reliability engineering distinguishes these characteristic types of failures: 1. Easy Failures 2. Wear out Failures 3. Chance Failures; which neither good debugging techniques nor the best maintenance practices can eliminate [3]. These failures are caused by sudden stress accumulations beyond the design strength of the component [6]. Chance failures occur at random intervals irregularly and unexpectedly. No one can predict when chance failures will occur. However, they obey certain rules of collective behavior so that the frequency of their occurrence during sufficiently long periods is approximately constant.
